The Spirit of Form is a group exhibition with artwork that examines the relationship between representation and shapes. Ma Desheng's Sans Titre IX , for example, consists of abstract forms that are reminiscent of stones (a frequent subject of Ma Desheng: see: biography) but also of a couple with a child. Likewise Emile Gilioli's luminous Grand Clown 'deconstructs' the image of a clown in taut shapes that show an essence and clarity we would not normally associate with this subject. François Stahly's Venus Hottentote goes beyond the voluptuous shapes of  Venus Hottentote to create a sensual, but essentially abstract image. The sculpture Golgotha by Parvine Curie on the other hand is angular in shape, so as to resemble a cross and express an experience of great suffering. Antoine Poncet's luminous, vivacious a l'Ecoute seems almost weightless by comparison. Philippe Scrive's Oiseau while abstract, reveals something about animal and human existence.  Abstract sculpture, in other words, is never just about form. It is also about spirit. And the spirit of form can take many shapes.
